This June, DNAngels is proud to recognize Fi Ní Dhonnabháin as our Volunteer of the Month—a remarkable research assistant whose expertise, dedication, and heart have made an indelible mark on the lives of those searching for their Irish roots.
Born and raised in Ireland, Fi brings over a decade of experience helping adoptees and others untangle their Irish heritage. Her fascination with DNA began in a secondary school biology class and has since evolved into a deep passion for combining science with genealogy to help reconnect families.
Fi is a key member of our UK Team, and according to her Team Lead, Carolanne Murphy, her contributions are nothing short of extraordinary.
“Fi has an amazing skill with Irish records and truly is our boots on the ground. She uncovers nuggets of information—things the average Joe Bloggs would never find—which allow us to push through stuck cases. She’s an asset to our team, and her brilliance is about to crack a long-standing grandparent case. Her nuggets often lead to our pot of gold!”
Indeed, Fi has been instrumental in revitalizing multiple stagnant cases. With compassion, tenacity, and an uncanny ability to locate obscure details buried in local records, she brings not just skill, but heart, to every client she helps.
Executive Director Laura Olmsted echoes this sentiment:

Fi’s ability to connect with clients, navigate complex Irish genealogy, and offer hope when it feels out of reach embodies the spirit of DNAngels. Her work reminds us all that behind every discovery is someone willing to dig a little deeper, listen a little longer, and care a little more.
