This month, DNAngels is thrilled to recognize the entire team specializing in cases with roots in Puerto Rico as our Volunteers of the Month. Led by the passionate and tireless Brenda Gudino, this team has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication in navigating the complexities of Puerto Rican genealogy, often marked by the challenges of endogamy. Their work brings hope and closure to clients facing some of the most difficult genealogical puzzles.
Brenda Gudino, the leader of Team Puerto Rico, is a seasoned volunteer whose passion for genealogy began with her personal journey to uncover her Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. Married for 39 years to her husband, whose Navy career took them around the world, Brenda is a proud mother of five and a doting grandmother. Her journey into genealogy started over 33 years ago and has since evolved into a full-time passion. As the team lead, Brenda is driven by her mission to bring closure to countless clients, ensuring that each case receives the care and attention it deserves. “Brenda’s energy and personal investment in every case is unmatched,” says DNAngels Executive Director Laura Olmsted.
Joining Brenda is Cecilia Gonzalez Herrera-Morales, a retired Senior Director of EHRS/RCM for Federally Qualified Health Centers in Chicago. Cecilia was recruited to DNAngels by lead researcher Liza Ceballos, and has since proven to be an invaluable member of the team. Her dedication is evident, as she spends countless hours researching and expanding family trees. Brenda praises her saying, “There is no way we could accomplish what we do without Cecilia’s tireless efforts. She is truly at the core of our research team.”
Yarianni Díaz is another vital member of Team Puerto Rico. Born and raised in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Yarianni’s interest in genealogy was sparked after learning about the Golden State Killer case. This curiosity led her to pursue a degree in Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy, which she completed in 2023. Yarianni’s fresh perspective and sharp eyes have breathed new life into long-standing cases. “Her enthusiasm and commitment have invigorated our team,” Brenda says, appreciating Yarianni’s contributions.
Lastly, we celebrate Liza Ceballos, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and now a lead researcher for DNAngels’ Puerto Rican cases. Liza’s passion for uncovering family connections began ten years ago when she took an at-home DNA test. Her journey into helping others navigate Puerto Rican records has made her an indispensable member of the team. “Liza’s leadership and teaching abilities are remarkable,” says Brenda. “She is truly my right hand and the glue that holds this team together.”
Team Puerto Rico is an exemplary group of volunteers, combining their expertise and passion to bring answers and closure to clients with deep roots in Puerto Rico. Thank you to Brenda, Cecilia, Yarianni, and Liza for your unwavering dedication and hard work!
